My Corporate Story
I had a successful corporate career for over 13 years, my last role was as a General Manager in a incentive marketing agency, consulting some of Australia's leading brands. I loved my job and was great at it, but it required a lot of investment and sacrifice - emotional and intellectual energy and of course, the precious gift of time. Working 8-6pm was a short day.
Over 8 years ago I started practicing Yoga once or twice a week (more about my personal Yoga journey here). After a few weeks, I noticed the physical improvements particularly in my posture, as I become more aware of my body and how to align it correctly, both when sitting and standing. Soon after came the considerable change in my attention span, ability to meet difficult situations (and people), manage stress levels and manage my time more effectively. Long hours do not always equate to greater output. Missing my ‘hump day’ Wednesday Yoga class really impacted the remainder of my working week.
I credit the mindfulness and self awareness of yoga and meditation for helping me transition from being called a "Maltese ball breaker” (I'm not kidding) to staff writing on my farewell cards, “You are the boss that every employee in this world would dream to have as a mentor” (blushing). I was still firm and achieved even greater results, but without any breakages.
Respect is a fundamental part of successful relationships - in work and play. Through yoga, we learn to respect and nurture our own body and mind. Only then can we truly expand that respect to others.
